Coal Mining Destruction

Abstract: A 7 page paper discussing surface mining. Surface mining used to be more commonly known as strip mining, and the first law requiring environmental restoration of the land after the completion of a strip mining operation was passed 20 years ago. Though the law was amended in 1997 to be far more stringent in its environmental requirements, it is far too easy to be granted variance on the environmental standards. Drastic surface mining has become commonplace in south central West Virginia, where the surface frequently is the current level of mountain exposed through mountaintop removal.
