Mentoring in Nursing

Abstract: Mentoring was founded in ancient Ithaca when Odysseus entrusted his son Telemachus to the care of Mentor. After a time, Mentor revealed himself to be Athena, the goddess of arts and history. A mentor is typically considered to be an older, wiser person who assumes some responsibility as a role model, motivator, companion and teacher. This 15 page paper argues that mentoring is a valuable and essential component to the work experiences of nurses. In the processes inherent to their jobs, nurses are constantly involved in mentoring activities. On a daily basis, they are inspiring and motivating patients, families, and other nurses. They are always in the process of developing a personal sense of empowerment and leadership in the acts of meeting patient's needs, helping co-workers, and answering questions for students. There is much that can be gained and very little to be lost in the process of mentoring within the nursing profession. Bibliography lists 16 sources.
