Abstract: 5 pages in length. Considered rare in relation to conventional lake formations, the natural creation of Crawford Lake occurred as the direct result of a deep crack found in the Niagara Escarpment. This fissure, cavernous enough to prevent any sunlight from reaching the bottom water and, thereby, rendering it extremely cold, keeps the top and bottom water layers separated to such an extent that they never mix, scientifically called meromictic.
