Abstract: This paper explores the meaning behind the lyrics of "America the Beautiful," written by poet Katherine Lee Bates during the late 19th century. Also included is a little history of the song, as well as its competition against the "Star Spangled Banner" to become America's national anthem. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
