Abstract: An 8 page paper discussing the definition of 'modern' and relating architecture to social theory. Works by Marshall Berman, Kate Nesbitt, Diane Ghirardo, Thomas Dutton and Hussan Fathy are discussed. Despite raising the ire of architectural purists, these authors, over the objections of those not sharing their populist views and preferring to keep architecture in the realm of art and elitism rather than that of practical usefulness and a means of enhancing the quality of life for much of the world's population, understand that they are taking highly unpopular views with both conservatives and purists. In the defense of the rights of the world's peoples and faith that architecture can indeed meet the challenge, they all fully welcome the conflict they invite with their truths.
