Abstract: A paper which looks at the structure and performance of Lilac Garden, with regard to the combination of dramatic emotion and stylised decorum in the choreography of the piece, and the way in which its internal cohesion depends on a balance of energy and formality which is difficult to achieve in terms of its narrative scope.
