The Importance of the Influence of John Coltrane

Abstract: A six page paper which looks at the life and career of the influential jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, showing how his conversion to Islam and the spiritual quest which formed a major element of the rest of his life provided the basis for his redefinition of the form and structure of jazz. The writer considers the ways in which he integrated diverse musical influences from other cultures and traditions into his work, and looks at the way in which his art was received by his contemporaries.
