The Transformation of Modern Art in the Last Quarter of the 19th Century

Abstract: The changes in paintings in the last 30 years of the 19th century mark the most dramatic, distinct, and impressive changes in visual art since the Renaissance. This 5 page paper looks at the works of Seurat, Van Gogh, and Cezanne and considers the progression into modernism that these works represent. This paper will focus predominantly on the two works, one each by Van Gogh and Cezanne, and consider the elements of modernism represented in their compositions, choice of color and line, distinct characteristics and their subjects.
