Staircases: Metaphorical and Real

Abstract: (5 pp) In myth and imagination, in history and reality, the staircase has always been a symbol of uncertainty and expectation. Architects have defined staircases to suggest levels of power, to suggest control and to heighten a sense of symbolic passage on a physical level. To demonstrate this idea three distinct historical staircases will be examined: stairs in the Palace of Knossos in Crete; stairs in a southern Georgia mansion and stairs in a southwest New Mexico chapel. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
