Abstract: Two documents - the 'Fourth Of July' speech by Frederick Douglass in 1852 and the opinion of Justice Taney in the Dred Scott versus Sanford case of 1857 are, in essence, declaring the same thing - that blacks of the pre-Civil War era do not have the rights of an American citizen. This 5 page paper compares the opinion of Justice Taney with the speech by Douglass. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
